Since the update with the new file size limit of 8 mb, I made a gifset with larger file sizes to test, and so this post is mostly to document it.

1st gif

• original .gif size: 7.35 mb
• compressed .gifv size: 1.016 mb
• percentage reduction: 86.2%
  

2nd gif

• original .gif size: 5.47 mb
• compressed .gifv size: 0.69 mb
• percentage reduction: 87.4%
  

3rd gif

• original .gif size: 2.88 mb
• compressed .gifv size: 2.51 mb
• percentage reduction: 12.8%
  

So obviously, for the least amount of compression and quality reduction, you still want to keep your gifs around or under 3 mb. The quality drop isn’t significant.

You can always install an extension that replaces the gifv with the original gif file, but who knows how long those will still work, with how opaque tumblr is about these updates.
